Here are my top ten tips for choosing effective domain names:

1. Choose a dot com domain as your main web site domain name. The .com generally performs better within the search engines and is the natural choice for business online.

2. Register your county domain also. If you are UK based then register the ‘.co.uk’ version and set-up a 301 redirect to your main site.

3. Register common misspellings of your main domain and set-up 301 redirects to your main site.

4. Register a domain which contains your main keyword. Establish your main keyword by summarising your business in one single word. Keep it to one word only – it can be done – not a phrase or 2 words, just one single word. Make this your main website domain name.

5. Search for a domain that contains this word and as few other letters as possible. Do not use numbers or hyphens, Just use the main keyword and a few other letters. The main keyword can be at the beginning or the end. It doesn’t matter that much.

6. Discover the top 10 keyword searches related to your site’s main theme. You can use a tool such as ‘Wordtracker’ to find out the most popular keyword searches. Register a domain for each popular keyword term and create a ‘content’ site on each domain name. The content can be articles, resources, downloads, forums etc… Create the content in sub-directories in the main domain. Each sub-directory will have a theme related to the domain keyword. Make sure the homepage of each content site links to your main web site. In this way you are funnelling all related searches to your main keyword website.

7. Register the .org version of your main website domain name. MSN tend to favour .org domain names so you can create a doorway page for the .org to achieve a high MSN ranking.

8. Use a domain registration service that registers domain in real-time and can provide a 301 redirect service and full POP3 email.

9. Search for expired domain names that could have existing back links to provide immediate traffic and quick search engine listings.

10. Register domain names for ‘key-in’ traffic. This is traffic from a visitor who simply enters a series of the keywords direct into the browser followed by a ‘.com’ In other words, the domain will be a series of the most popular keyword terms related to your site followed the domain ending. These type of domains are not as search engine friendly but can provide instant free traffic for your site.

Finally, domain names are a relatively cheap means of driving traffic to your site and if used effectively can increase your search engine ranking and drive free targeted traffic to your website.

If you have a website you’re no doubt constantly wondering “How can I get more traffic to my website?”. As web owners we constantly want more traffic, especially if we’re doing business online. It’s just the nature of things because without traffic a website can’t survive. Whether we want more subscribers, more customers or just more visitors to read our content — and possibly click on our AdSense ads ;) — it’s what we crave: More traffic.

Well, how CAN you get more traffic to your website? There are various methods available, some cost money, some are free, some take a second to do and some can take a long time. What I’m doing to talk about is writing and distributing articles – submitting articles to article directories to be exact. Because it’s 100% free and doesn’t have to take a lot of time.

No matter what market you are in you should be able to find a subject to write about that your potential subscribers, customers or visitors would be interested in — and if your article gets read you will most likely get traffic. Plus, you could also get some nice backlinks to your website which is of course always good for search engine rankings. I’ll explain the reason behind that later on.

Now, you might not consider yourself a writer but writing an article doesn’t have to be hard. It doesn’t even have to be long — 300-400 words per article could be enough if you get your point across even though 600-900 words is more common (but 1200 is usually the maximum).

If you know your market and you’re passionate about what you’re doing then writing an article shouldn’t be a problem. If you need ideas go to forums and blogs in your niche or just see if there is anything in the news you could write about. Also, one trick is to do it like you’re writing a letter to a good friend where you’re telling him about something specific.

Another solution, if you have no interest in writing an article or just don’t have the time, you can let someone else do it. You could go to freelance sites like elance.com, rentacoder.com or guru.com and pay someone to write an article for you. But you should have some idea what it should be about.

Let’s assume that you have your article. Next thing you want to do is find article directories that accept articles on your topic and submit to as many as you can find. To find article directories you can go to your favorite search engine and type in “article directory” or “submit article”. That should give you a few general directories.

But if you want to find an article directory that is specific to your market you should search for “X article directory” or “submit X article” – where X is the market you’re in (like “gardening” or “health”).

Then, when you’re on the site look for “Submit an article” or “Add article”. Make sure you read all the submission guidelines – some sites allow HTML codes and some don’t, some places allow affiliate links and some don’t, etc. Usually the article directory is organized into many categories and even subcategories. Try to select the category that best fits your article – it’ll help with getting your article approved as fast as possible as well as giving you more targeted readers.

If you’re not experienced in article marketing you might not realize the benefit of publishing your articles. First of all, you’ll get your name displayed all over the internet – people will start to recognize it and trust you.

But the main reason so many people want to get their article in as many directories as possible is because of the “resource box” or “about the author” that is displayed at the end of the article.

That resource box can contain the name of your business, your mailing address, web address (to your main page or an opt-in page, etc.), e-mail address, phone number or however you want people to contact you or learn more about you and your business. For some people the link to their website is the most important part of their resource box.

Most article directories allow “active links” in the resource box that people can click on. You definitely want to submit to as many of those directories as you can because for each one you’ll get another link back to your website – and that will help you rank higher in the search engines.

Another benefit of this is that if you’ve written a good article that people like they’ll be more likely to click on the link in your resource box – hint, hint ;) . They might also feel like they’ve gotten to know you a little and trust you – which means they’re more likely to do business with you.

A well written article will probably also be picked up by more website owners and newsletter editors – giving you more exposure and traffic. But you don’t have to write a masterpiece the first time – just get started and you’ll get better with each article you write.

So, to get more traffic, sales and subscribers you should get yourself an article about a subject related to your market (either write it yourself or have it written for you by a ghostwriter), find article directories that accept your topic and submit to as many of them that you can find.

So you have the best website money can buy you are immensely proud of your finished product but still no-one is buying. Why?

Your final profit is simple to calculate it is a factor of number of visitors * conversion rate * profit per visitor. The third factor, profit per visitor is usually where people focus their resources. It is a known quantity and easy to manipulate by simply charging the right price.

But the killer question is always how much traffic am I getting? And further are they the sort of visitors who will buy my wares?

With that simple statement in mind let?s have a look at the main sources of traffic on the internet today.

Search Engine Traffic

The best because it?s free. The worst because it is easily taken away. SE traffic is risky. It is easily acquired for relatively low competitive keywords with a simple knowledge of search engine optimization best practice.

Each search engine orders websites for any given term according to it?s own proprietary algorithm. This algorithm usually is based upon the various factors detailed in the SEO checklist, however the weighting applied will differ for each.

There are currently 3 major search engines being:- Google, Yahoo and MSN. Google is by far the most popularly used search tool.
For more competitive terms the SEO checklist is still applicable however will require additional effort in the key areas of the same key factors. You can investigate competition via these useful tools.

Directory Listings

These are not the massive source of traffic they once were. Submission to a directory is now more use to substantiate your link popularity, a key factor in search engine positioning. The most popular free and paid directories are included within our directory listings.

Paid Advertising

Once banner advertising reigned supreme, however today it is generally recognised that most website visitors suffer heavily from ?banner blindness?. Visitors have seen so many banners over the years that they are now subconsciously tuned out when looking at the website.

Much more effective in today?s market place is the basic text link. Not surprisingly a link which is text only! These form the basis of advertising in many a Pay-Per-Click advertising campaign. Pay Per Click is the notion of paying only for visitors to a website that click on your link. Hence you will only pay for visitors to you website and not each time your banner or text link is displayed.

In return your site will be displayed on other members websites according to the individual co-operatives weighting factors.

The second, traffic exchanges, require you to browse websites presented on a central site. You are awarded points according to how many sites you have browsed and in turn these credits may be spent by promoting your site in the same way to other browsers.
Repeat Vistors

So often overlooked. You have done the hard work in getting a first time visitor to you site now get him to stay and later to return for more. There are various methods for making your site ?sticky? these include:- including a newsletter and appropriate sign up form, supplying good content, either written by yourself or sourced from the abundance of free information on the net.

Such simple things as including contact details and appropriate use of autoresponders can make all the difference.

Viral Marketing

A rather flash title for a collection of techniques which are common sense but often forgotten. Such examples include:- writing your own articles, building communities via forums, offering free items/bonuses/competitions, producing your own e-book and issuing press releases.

If you are marketing your own product one of the most successful methods will undoubtedly be starting your own affiliate program and getting others to sell for you.

Competition

The fifth technique is to find newsgroups that pertain to your products or services and participate in the conversations. Try not to oversell your products or services as you will most likely be banned from them and really create a bad impression for yourself. Rather, only answer the questions that people ask to make yourself the true expert in the field so that people will visit your website.

These techniques are low cost in order to get people to visit your website. While not the only techniques out there for driving traffic to your website these are some of the most effective techniques that will help establish your website as a true leader in the field.
